The University of Arkansas, a state university, was established in 1871 as a land-grant institution. Also called the U of A, it is located in Fayetteville, a city in northwest Arkansas. As of Fall 2016, it had a total enrollment of 27,194 students. The Admission Process and the Cost of SchoolingSeveral admission criteria need to be fulfilled when applying to an undergraduate program at the University of Arkansas. These include the completion of at least 16 high school academic units, a high school GPA of more than or equal to 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, an ACT score of at least 20, or the SAT equivalent. Tuition and fees are dependent on the number of credit hours. For undergraduates who are Arkansas residents, the total cost of attendance ranges from $19, 564 to $24,916. For non-business graduate students who are Arkansas residents, the cost is $28,024. The cost is a bit higher for business graduate studies at $31,962 and law studies at $32,714. Students who are not residents of Arkansas have to pay a higher cost of attendance. Undergraduate fees range from $34,810 to $40,904. Non-business graduate studies cost $44,318 while business graduate studies cost $54,186. Law studies cost $51,614. Financial aid is available for students who are economically challenged. A Federal Student Aid (FSA) is available for eligible students. Eligibility criteria include: being enrolled as a regular student in an aid-eligible program, being a citizen or an eligible non-citizen, completion of the application process via the Office of Financial Aid, not in default on any Title IV loan, not convicted in a drug-related case, and Academic and Research ProgramsThere are 85 undergraduate programs, 81 master's degree programs, 42 doctoral and specialist programs, and 26 graduate certificate programs at the University of Arkansas. With 1,353 members of the faculty, the faculty to student ratio is 1:19. The average ACT of students is 26. The 6-year graduation rate is 64.5%. The University of Arkansas is considered a leading research institution, given its various doctoral degrees and the number of its research expenditures and research output. The University identifies six interdisciplinary research strengths namely 1) health, 2) nanotechnology, 3) energy and environment, 4) art, architecture and humanities, 5) food safety, and 6) supply chain, retail and transportation. The University has several resource centers at hand for researchers. These resource centers include the Office of Research and Economic Development, the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, the Office of Research Compliance, the Arkansas Research and Technology Park, and the Technology Ventures team. Famous Graduates and other Fun FactsThe names of University of Arkansas graduates are imprinted in the Senior Walk, a 3.7-mile long sidewalk. Prominent graduates of this public institution include J. William Fulbright, who served as a president of the university and created the famous Fulbright Scholarship Program, Bob Sauerberg (president of Conde Nast) and Doug McMillon (CEO and president of Wal-Mart Stores). Along with them are Veronica Campbell-Brown, an Olympic gold medalist, Darren McFadden, NFL player, and Asa Hutchinson, the Arkansas governor.
